Timber Crib Walls

Timber crib walls are a widely used retaining structure, built from interlocking timber "soldiers" and headers infilled with soil and vegetation. They're valued for their natural appearance and flexibility on sloped sites — but timber degrades over time. As soldiers rot, connections loosen and backfill washes out from behind the structure, the wall loses the structural integrity it was built with, leading to bulging, leaning, or in severe cases, partial collapse.

Vulcan Earth Anchors give you a way to intervene before that happens — or to make a failing wall safe again — without removing and rebuilding the structure. Anchors are driven through the face of the wall into stable ground behind it, then tensioned and locked off to hold the timber crib firmly in place. The result is a durable, structurally sound repair, completed in a fraction of the time and cost of reconstruction.

Why This Application Matters

A failing timber crib wall is rarely a small problem. Because these walls typically retain sloped ground next to paths, car parks, gardens or buildings, ongoing movement puts people, property and access at risk — and the problem only gets worse the longer it's left.

The traditional response is to demolish and rebuild the wall entirely: expensive, slow, and often impractical on sites with restricted access, mature planting, or nearby structures that can't accommodate heavy plant or a long construction programme. Ground anchoring offers a different route — reinforcing the wall that's already there, so it can carry on doing its job for years to come.

How Our Timber Crib Wall Solution Works

Vulcan Earth Anchors — Primary Stabilisation

A specially designed earth anchor with a larger surface area is driven through the face of the timber crib wall into stable, undisturbed ground behind it. Once at depth, the anchor locks into position, the tensile load is applied, and the exposed end is locked off and terminated at the wall face.

For typical timber crib wall projects this is the AS-30 to AS-90 range, giving holding capacities from 14kN up to 169kN depending on ground conditions — full details in the table below. All anchor loadings should be proof-tested on site before being brought into service.

Geotextile Meshing — Face Reinforcement & Erosion Control

Where the wall face itself needs reinforcing, we supply and install high-performance geotextile mesh, held in place with smaller AS-05 geotextile anchors:

  • Deltax® — a lightweight, high-tensile steel wire mesh (up to 1770 N/mm²) for surface stabilisation. It controls erosion and retains loose material at the wall face, and is galvanised — with an optional coating — for long-term durability in exposed environments.

  • Greenax® — combines a high-tensile steel wire mesh with an integrated erosion control mat (coir or synthetic), giving immediate soil retention while allowing vegetation to establish through it. Ideal where a natural, green finish is important — visually sensitive sites or those subject to environmental regulation.

Gabion Baskets — Hybrid Facing & Toe Support

On more severely deteriorated walls, gabion baskets can be built in front of or alongside the timber crib structure as part of a hybrid repair:

  • Facing: a durable, attractive finish to the repaired section, replacing timber that has failed completely.

  • Erosion protection: shielding the wall face from water runoff and surface erosion — particularly useful near watercourses.

  • Drainage: permeable construction lets water filter through while retaining soil, reducing hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and extending its life.

  • Structural support: in some designs, gabions provide secondary gravity support at the toe of the wall on steep or unstable ground.

Which Products Are Used for This Application

  • AS-30 — 14–87kN ultimate anchor resistance. Lighter-duty timber crib stabilisation.

  • AS-50 — 19–119kN ultimate anchor resistance. Standard primary stabilisation — the most common choice on timber crib projects.

  • AS-90 — 33–169kN ultimate anchor resistance. Higher-load or larger-scale walls.

  • AS-05 — geotextile anchor used to fix mesh at the crest and toe of the wall.

All anchor loadings are based on the optimal tendon choice for the mechanical anchoring system; true capacity should always be confirmed with a load locker/on-site test.

Paired with Deltax or Greenax geotextile mesh and, where needed, gabion baskets for facing and erosion control.

Can a failing timber crib wall be repaired without a full rebuild?

In most cases, yes. Vulcan Earth Anchors are designed to stabilise the existing structure in place, anchoring it into stable ground behind the wall rather than requiring demolition and reconstruction.

Can the finished wall still look natural?

Yes. Geotextile mesh options like Greenax combine erosion control with vegetation growth, and gabion facing can be used where a stone finish is preferred — both restore or improve the wall's appearance as part of the repair.

What if part of the timber structure has failed completely?

Where sections of timber have deteriorated beyond repair, gabion baskets can be built in to replace that section while the Vulcan Earth Anchor system stabilises the wall as a whole — as used on the Cleeve Court project.
