P115 – Itchen Valley Bus Shelters

REQUIREMENT

Itchen Abbas is a village running along the River Itchen, near Winchester. The meandering river and strong history of fishing have inspired the designs of the new local bus shelters. The South Downs National Park issued a requirement for the bus shelters to be designed in a creative way which reflects the local area. Each of the bus stops were required to provide a safe space for waiting with appropriate shelter, seating and signage. Building Naturally Engineers provided the innovative designs based on natural and fluid forms. All Shelter timber materials were sourced locally from the National Park. Anchor Systems (International) Ltd (ASIL) were asked to get involved to provide an innovative and sustainable foundation solution. We had to meet with the environmental characteristics of the project based on the construction materials that would be used for the construction of the foundation.

SOLUTION

ASIL proposed the Anchor Post solution which is a patented solution that has been created by a local Inventor Ewan Smith, owner of ASIL. The Anchor Post has a number of structural and Geotechnical qualities that met the design loading requirements of the innovative bus shelters.

The fact that the Anchor Post product is produced from 60% recycled steel was yet another proper reason for the use of this foundation solution in this project.

The 1.5m Anchor Post was determined to be the foundation of choice for this project. The 1.5m Anchor Post has been traditionally designed for the UK Rail sector where it has been developed as a bespoke foundation solution for new build and replacement signalling solutions.

The Anchor Post comes from a background of being used in the rail transport industry and continues its progress in supporting structures alongside roads and highways.
