Geocell Reinforcement for Slope Stability at Kings Dyke
- CLIENT : Jones Bros
- CONTRACTORS : Jones Bros
- INSTALLER : Jones Bros
REQUIREMENT
At Kings Dyke, Peterborough, a new road development required the re-profiling of a 70-degree slope. The slope, composed of Type 1 fill, needed reinforcement to ensure long-term stability. Additionally, an aesthetically pleasing solution was required to support vegetation growth.
Site challenges included:
- Slope reinforcement on a steep incline
- Material transportation constraints, requiring roadside drop-offs
- The need for a fall arrest system to ensure safe installation
Testing
Before installation, a site test was conducted to confirm the suitability of the Vulcan Earth Anchor system. Engineers tested the AS-10 galvanised anchors, ensuring they could withstand the required 13kN load capacity. The test successfully validated their performance, confirming they met all safety and durability requirements
SOLUTION
To stabilise the slope and support vegetation growth, 56 AS-10 galvanised Vulcan Earth Anchors were installed. These anchors were used to secure a Geocell system, which reinforces the surface while allowing for natural green coverage.
Installation Process:
- Equipment Used: Hand-held hydraulic breaker, frame winch, dynamometer
- Installation Method: Manual placement of anchors, secured through dynamic load testing
The combination of Geocell and Vulcan Earth Anchors created a strong, durable, and environmentally friendly solution for the slope
Result
The project achieved all slope reinforcement objectives:
- Long-term stability of the 70-degree slope
- Aesthetically enhanced surface supporting vegetation growth
- Strong geotechnical performance, with a verified 13kN load capacity
- No unexpected issues encountered during installation
By using a Geocell system reinforced with Vulcan Earth Anchors, the Kings Dyke project successfully delivered a safe, stable, and sustainable infrastructure solution.
